WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOUR INTERPRETERS/CAPTIONERS HAVE?

Hawai’i Interpreting Services (HIS) hires skilled interpreters and real-time captioners who are linguistically and culturally competent, have ethical and professional business practices, and a strong connection to the Deaf community. Interpreters who sub-contract with us hold a national certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or a Hawai’i State Sign Language Interpreter Credential.   If there is a legal appointment, interpreters must meet the mandatory requirements set by the Hawaii State Judiciary’s Court Interpreter Certification Program. Captioners are certified via the National Court Reporters Association.

 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN INTERPRETER WHEN HE/SHE ARRIVES TO THE APPT?

On the day of the appointment, the interpreter (and her/his team) will arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in with the contact person and Deaf client and prepare to facilitate communication. The interpreter and team will work with the clients to best assess where the optimum place is for the interpreter(s) and Deaf client to sit.  The interpreter(s) will work with Deaf clients to establish rapport and assess language preferences to ensure smooth communication.  If the business or agency that hired our services has any questions about the interpreting process, the interpreter(s) will be there to assist them so that the appointment goes smoothly.  Contact HIS for questions related to billing or business procedures.

 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A CAPTIONER WHEN HE/SHE ARRIVES TO THE APPT?

On the day of the appointment, the captioner will arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to meet with all clients and determine the best place to set up their specialized equipment.  Make sure you have an agreement clarifying who can be supplied with a transcript.

IS THE INFORMATION I GIVE OUT TO YOUR AGENCY CONFIDENTIAL?

All your information is kept completely confidential in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, The Association of Court Reporters and Captioners (NACA) as well as HIPAA mandates.  Once you share your contact details with us, they are secure.
